Who is the brand Columbia?

Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, Columbia Sportswear Company has been making gear so that Pacific Northwesterners can enjoy the outdoors for more than 70 years. At the helm for over 40 years has been their Chairman, Gert Boyle. Her Tough Mother persona has grown Columbia into the global sportswear company that it is today—still based in Portland, still making no-nonsense apparel and footwear to keep you WARM, DRY, COOL and PROTECTED no matter what. Their unique Pacific Northwest heritage and Boyle family irreverence is what sets them apart from the competition. Columbia are a family business gone global. Chairman Gert Boyle’s parents — German nationals who fled Nazi Germany in 1938 — purchased a small hat company upon their arrival in Portland and named it Columbia Hat Company, after the river that inspired their new home. This humble beginning was of huge significance to the family, marking new found freedom and a fresh start. Her husband later took over, and after he died Gert ran the show, going from housewife to executive overnight. Today, her son Tim Boyle is our longtime president and CEO. The family — like the business — has experienced its ups and downs, but enjoying the outdoors together has always been integral to its success. This gear was made in a factory supporting BSR’s HERproject™, a multifaceted program that strives to empower women working in global supply chains through health, finance, and gender equality training. At Columbia Sportswear, we believe we can have a positive impact on the world by improving the lives of women and men in our supply chain. That’s why we partner with our suppliers and nonprofit organizations like Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) to implement HERproject—a multifaceted program that strives to empower women working in global supply chains by delivering training on improving health (HERhealth), finance (HERfinance), and gender equality training (HERrespect).
