In 1937, Gert Boyle’s parents fled Nazi Germany and settled in Portland, purchasing and renaming a small hat manufacturer as the Columbia Hat Company. The business was passed down from Gert’s father to her husband Neal, and then to Gert herself in 1970 after Neal’s sudden death. Gert Boyle’s “tough mother” persona and her high standards continue to influence the Columbia brand.
